<image:caption>By regaining skills and technologies that empower our basic survival, we release ourselves from reliance on systems of power beyond our control. By being accountable for our basic needs, we re-connect with a sense of gratitude through having a relationship to all that sustains us. We are learning how to be symbiotic with each other and our environment so we can continue to appreciate life on this planet, and realize our full potential.</image:caption>

<image:title>Solar info - Harnessing the power of the sun..</image:title>
<image:caption>The biggest limiting factor of solar technology have always been the cost of batteries. But with recent development of LifePo4 batteries, it has become more realistic and cost effective option. For our off grid solar system, we use a DIY 8700wh 24v LifePO4 battery stack, 1000watts solar panels, a 40Amp charge controller and a 3000watts invertor. Powering 4 mini fridges, lights, blenders, charging devices and small power tools occasionally. When its been shady for a few days, we supplement our energy needs with a backup 1600watts invertor generator.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Using buckwheat as a cover crop helped to keep our soil moist and cool, protecting it from harsh sunlight and erosion from strong wind or rain. In addition, it seemed to help distract pests from our staple crops, while providing beneficial pollinators plenty of flower food. We even noticed it provided structural support for our young tomato plants from blowing over in the wind. Buckwheat has an edible seed used in cereals and flour. Clover is another cover crop we tried to use, as it has the benefit of fixing nitrogen naturally. However, the buckwheat overtook it. In the future we would use them separately or in different seasons.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food and Forage - Nature’s gifts are all around us, if you know how to look.</image:title>
<image:caption>We are blessed with access to wild land, a privilege we seek to honor by learning to utilize and share its gifts. Some of the plants we are learning to be in relationship with are Nopales (prickly Pear cactus), dewberries (like blackberries), Yeopan (a natural source of caffeinated tea), Mustang grapes (wine), Chili Pequin, and wild lemon cucumbers. We have also processed roosters, rabbits, rattlesnake, wild pig, or deer for their pelt or meat. We generally don’t hunt or slaughter, but occasionally we are presented with a death which we try to make use of as these are skills which reconnect us to relationship with the wild world, and localize our food and fiber resources. unfortunately, because of human development there isnt an abundance of habitat for wild animals to live in, so we allow our land to largely be a refuge. As such, we also choose to cultivate our own food from the garden and raise chickens for eggs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gravity fed shower - A simple tower to pressurize your rainwater.</image:title>
<image:caption>2.3 ft of elevation = 1 psi or 1 ft elevation = .433 of water pressure This tower waters our garden and provides a shower space underneath the structure. At 15 ft tall, we get about 6.5 lbs of pressure, plenty for gravity drip irrigation, and just enough for a nice, long, cool shower without feeling like you are wasting lots of water. We use a solar pump to move water from our 5,000 gallon tank collector up to the 275 gallon IBC tote at the top of the tower, about once every week or two.</image:caption>

<image:title>Salvage - Salvaging and recycling is an act of appreciating what we have</image:title>
<image:caption>The concept of salvaging and recycling exists from the largest to the smallest scale through out our world. From stardust to the formation of life, to the bacteria and organisms that transform excrement back into soil, the concept of trash has never existed until we invented it. We choose to salvage whenever we are able to, and there is abundance when we do. All it takes is some time and human energy. In a culture of waste, we fill an ecological niche, allowing us to get most of our resources for very little cost, often for free.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rainwater Harvesting - Life starts with water.</image:title>
<image:caption>Relatively easy and cheap to setup, a person can catch enough water to live just from the small roof above their head. This 100 sqft camper can catch 3,000 gallons per year in Texas. We started with 50 gallon food grade containers and have upgraded to 275 gallon IBC totes. Roof area (ft2) x Precipitation (in) x .623 = gallons of rainwater</image:caption>

We then use a solar powered water pump to fill a 275 gallon ibc tote sitting upon a 15 foot water tower, which is enough pressure to gravity feed to the garden irrigation, and the main shower.</image:caption>

<image:title>Compost Toilet info - Simple solutions to turn waste into gold...</image:title>
<image:caption>By far the easiest off-grid technology to install and use, that takes the food you’ve spent good money on and turns it into fully processed fertilizer to enhance your soil. All it takes is a couple handfuls of leaves or sawdust (free from the local Lumber mill) and time to create the richest soil you’ve ever seen. We leave our humanure for 2 years to be extra safe in making sure it’s fully composted. For larger installs, we use strawbales as a foundation which accommodates 10-30 ppl longer term. These often have a lightweight moveable shelter on top so when the bales fill, the shelter can be moved to a new strawbale foundation.</image:caption>
